To organize your places in North, you can add them to Standard Lists and Smart Lists. This article will walk you through the differences between the two list types and help you unlock the power of Smart Lists.

It's important to note that you can save a place in North without putting it on any of your North Lists—in this case, the place will appear on Your Map, and you can still save ratings and notes for that place. It's also possible to have one of your saved places in North appear across multiple lists. This gives you ultimate flexibility with how you'd like to organize your places.

What is a Standard List?

A Standard List in North is a straightforward way to keep your favorite places organized, working just like lists in Google Maps.

To include places in a Standard List, you need to add them manually.

What is a Smart List?

A Smart List is effectively a set of saved filters. So, any data tied to your places (such as the cities they're in and the ratings you gave them) can be used to create a Smart List.

When you save new places in North that fit your Smart List criteria, North automatically adds them for you. No extra work needed to keep your places organized.

How to Create a Standard List

  1. Navigate to the Lists tab

  2. Tap the Create button in the header

  3. Select Standard List

  4. Give your list a name, and optionally add a description and banner image

  5. Start adding places to your list

Any places you have saved in North or save in North in the future that match the saved filters on this list will automatically be added for you.

When to use a Smart List

Scenario 1: Trip Planning

Imagine you're planning a trip to Lisbon. You've saved some recommendations you've received from friends, a few Michelin award winners, and a few sights you found online.

You could manually add these to a standard list, "My Big Lisbon Trip", but that's the old way of doing things.

Instead, just create a Smart List with the filters: City is Lisbon and Rating is Wanna Go. Boom! All your places appear on your Lisbon list.

Here's the magic part—when you save that century-old bakery serving the best pastéis de nata in Lisbon, it automatically gets added to your Smart List.

Scenario 2: Sending Recommendations to Friends

What about when you get back from Lisbon, and all your friends want to know the best places you went?

Another Smart List to the rescue: City is Lisbon and Rating is Love It.

You've now got a list of all the places you loved from your visit to Lisbon. Hit "Publish", share the link, and bam, your friends have a beautiful map to recreate their own magic in the City of Light.

(Had you been using manual lists for this, you would have had to add all of your favorite places to your list of recommendations one at a time. Smart Lists are pretty handy, eh?)

Scenario 3: Trying New Local Restaurants

Your trip to Lisbon has inspired you to branch out with your local dining experiences now that you're back home.

Instead of frequenting the same spot over and over again for date night, you can create a Smart List to help you find somewhere new to try each week.

Just create a Smart List called "New Date Night Spots" with the filters: City is [Your Town], Category is Food, and Rating is Wanna Go.

Now, you've got an ever-evolving list of new local restaurants to try (your date will be so impressed!).
